Buying a wooden shed: The guide

Everything you need to know about buying a Wooden Shed

We previously looked at everything you need to know when you’re buying a Steel Shed, but today, we’re looking at their Wooden counterparts. We already have lots of blog posts dedicated to these timber sheds, including What’s the Difference in wood types and is it worth buying a pressure treated shed?, but here is where you’ll find the answers to hopefully any question that you may have.

If you’ve got limited time, read this page in it’s entirety and you’ll be best positioned to get the best shed for you.

We’ve written this in a way that you can jump to the main headlines as needed – you don’t need to read the whole thing (though we recommend that you do!). This post will concentrate on Wooden Sheds only, though – so keep that in mind!

All you need to know

We have a whole guide on what to know before you buy your shed, which will take the sting out of being unprepared. It covers everything from the base, to the correct location and access. It’s well worth the read – and not just because I wrote it, but because it’ll answer 99% of the questions you might have while you’re considering getting a shed. If you’re looking for a TLDR (Too long, didn’t read) version, here are the key points:

Main Considerations when buying a wooden shed

It’s important to remember that our steel sheds:

  • Wooden Sheds go up on blocks. 4″ solid concrete blocks are perfect. You cannot build a shed on cavity blocks.
  • Non-pressure treated sheds will need to be manually treated every year or two (e.g. painting or varnishing)
  • Pressure treated sheds are available. These are more expensive, but they require no manual treating for at least a decade.
    • Pressure Treated sheds will ‘silver’ over time. They will become paler and slightly silvery. This may happen in one month or one year or even later.
  • Almost all the sheds have a variety of wood types to choose from. You can see what the differences between these wood types are here.
  • Rustic shed is a very basic wood. Do not store anything inside a Rustic Wooden shed that can be affected by damp.
  • And, no, you cannot live in your shed.

Armed with this information, you should be ready to order.

You might be concerned about a company’s work or their aftercare support. You needn’t worry with us, we have a great rating across the board. All the details below were correct at the time of writing.

Other than customer reviews, we’re peer reviewed!

And we’re a bit of craic as well:

If you’re just looking for information about prices, we’ve a few ways to get sorted:

Brochures

You can see our Wooden Shed Brochures here. This is perhaps the quickest way to get a basic price.

Product pages

If you go to any Wooden Shed product page, for this example, let’s use the Standard Style Wooden Shed, you can see there are some options:

Wooden Shed options not selected

Once you choose something from each of the dropdown menus, a price will appear just below, like so:

All options selected and a price for the wooden shed appears below

Please note: The options may be slightly different on other wooden shed products, but the principle still holds.

Call us

If you’d rather call us, that’s no problem. We’re at 01 864 4247 and we’ll happily answer any questions during opening hours. Just note, that during peak season (April-June) our phone lines can be very busy. We will call back any unanswered calls at the nearest opportunity then.

Social Media

We’re very active on Facebook and this would be the first place to contact us. We’ve also got an Instagram account, and we’re even on TikTok. Message us there if you’d rather, but as above, these are only monitored during opening hours.

Once you’ve found a shed that you want from us, you’ve a few ways of ordering.

Ordering Online

Ordering on our website is exceptionally easy. Add the product you want to the cart and checkout like you would normally on any other website. Our website will only take a 12% deposit on any wooden shed purchase. The Wooden Department will follow up with you in the proceeding weeks to arrange a date for assembly, and they will take the outstanding balance then.

Revolut Payments (Online)

You can go about buying a shed online using your Revolut card, of course, but if you plan on paying with your Revolut card anyway, it may be worth your while visiting the Sheds Direct Ireland website through the Revolut app. Here you can take advantage of their  2% cash-back offer (Max €20)*.

To do so:

  • Open your Revolut app, choose ‘Hub’ from the bottom bar (it’s on the right)
  • Scroll down to Lifestyle (the yellow options)
  • Choose ‘Shops’
  • Search for ‘Sheds’ and click Sheds Direct Ireland
  • Choose your benefit.
  • Once you’ve selected which one you want, you can click the large, blue bar down the bottom (It’s name will change depending on what you pick)
  • Complete your order as you normally would

*Please note: All Revolut information was correct at the time of writing. Sheds Direct Ireland do not offer this cash-back, this is entirely dealt with in-app via Revolut and we have no say in how this process works in any way.

Buying a shed over the phone

You can purchase your Wooden Shed over the phone. We will take a 12% deposit and the rest can be paid over the phone with the Wooden Department when they call to arrange a fitting date with you.

Ordering in store

The Sheds Direct Ireland showroom as seen from the driveway outside. The building is a red-brick building, with a green, vinyl wrap of the sheds direct Ireland logo on the side. The sky above is a bright blue, like a Summers Day

You can of course order with us in store. We’re based in the Jamestown Business Park in Finglas. If you scroll down to the very bottom of the page here, you can see our opening hours and collection times in the website’s footer.

Alternative Payment Options for buying a shed

We can accept Bank Transfer, Postal Order and Cheque payments, however the shed assembly cannot be arranged until payment has been received by our accounts team.

We don’t offer finance for buying a shed directly ourselves, however you can avail of finance in the following two ways:

Revolut Payments (Online)

Revolut offer a ‘Pay Later‘ option on their app. We do not have any affiliation with this offer, nor do we have any say in their T&Cs. However, this is one way to get finance for a Sheds Direct Ireland shed. See how it works on the Revolut website and please note, that this option is only available online and through the Revolut app. Our staff cannot offer this service to you.

*Please note: All Revolut information was correct at the time of writing.

Humm

You can get finance through Humm for a Sheds Direct Ireland shed. You need to apply through Humm first and once approved, you then contact us in store at 01 864 4247 with your approval details.

We don’t have any say in their loan offers, their terms and conditions or payments schedule; They provide the finance and we provide the shed.

At the time of writing, we do not, and have never, offered flat-packed wooden sheds.

Wooden Shed Locations

Our Wooden Shed Team do not serve the whole country. The team have a strict agreement to only serve the following counties:

  • Dublin, Meath, Wicklow, Louth, Kildare, Carlow, Wexford, Westmeath & Kilkenny.

If you’re literally over the border from these counties, the team will not be able to supply you with a wooden shed.

Wooden Playhouses

The only exception to this rule is our new Wooden Playhouses. As we’re an agent for the team at Garden Play, they can service the whole island of Ireland.

Supply & Fit

All of our Wooden Sheds are supplied and fitted. Delivery and assembly is included in the price. Unlike Steel Sheds, Wooden Sheds do not require a lot of faff to set up.

You just need blocks!

Wooden Sheds don’t require a solid, level base, they just require a relatively flat-surface and they are built up onto blocks. We do not supply these blocks, but you’ll pick them up in a local builder’s suppliers like Chadwicks or Murdocks. You can see how many blocks you need for your wooden shed here.

These blocks don’t need to be laid out into any particular order, just leave them by the site and our team will use them as needed.

You can’t build a wooden shed flush to a flat-surface

Wooden Sheds cannot be built flush to a flat surface like concrete or paving slabs for a variety of reasons. The most pertinent is that sheds built flush to the ground will rot prematurely and considerably quicker than those elevated.

Be present at the time of assembly

Someone will need to be present to allow the fitters access to the back garden and ensure that they have the correct details for the build before they proceed.

Contact

The team will call you 30 minutes to an hour before arriving. We can’t give you an exact time because the fitters arrange their own runs, there may be delays at a previous installation, traffic etc.

Payment

All payments must be made in full before any shed assemblies can be carried out.

Our shed assembly team build anywhere from 5-10 sheds a day. They’re generally flat-out during the Summer months and they’re doing manual work for at least 8 hours a day. As such, we hope you understand that our shed assembly team are just that – a team that assemble sheds, and only sheds.

Our shed assembly team will not:

  • Assemble any other products that you purchase (e.g. shelves, door canopies etc.)
  • Do any base work. This needs to be ready ahead of time.
  • Deliver the shed into your garden by ‘throwing it over a wall’. Our team need safe access to your back garden.
  • Bolt your shed down (this is a safety/insurance issue as we cannot guarantee the absence of pipes, wiring or guarantee against damage to the base).
  • Remove any plastic covering on shed doors/panels
  • Apply any internal screw caps (these are optional, but they’ll leave a bag hanging up inside should you wish to apply these yourself)
  • Any electrical work. You will need a qualified electrician to do any electrical work for you.

Whether you’re getting a shed flat-packed or supplied and fitted, you can see what to expect, in our guide, handily titled ‘What to expect after purchasing your metal shed from Sheds Direct Ireland, right here.

We strongly, strongly recommend that you read it.

If you want to get int ouch for any reason, you can contact us here.
